Americans Spieth, Koepka, Kuchar seize lead at British Open

Americans Spieth, Koepka, Kuchar seize lead at British Open

Koepka was playing for the first time since winning the U.S. Open last month.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Charley Hoffman hit an iron from the right rough into the hole on No. 1 for an eagle.

U.S. golfer Jordan Spieth on the putting green.

"I'd say I hit five or six drivers today", Koepka said. "I am trying to keep the same tempo as in the States and act like it is a five-foot longer putt".

Spieth, world number three and twice major champion, putted smoothly to pick up five birdies and did not drop a shot after fierce crosswinds buffeted the early starters.

"Birkdale nine years ago felt pretty good on Sunday afternoon and it felt just as good today", said the 41-year-old, who did television commentary on the Open last year after being sidelined with a foot injury. The 146th Open began in cool temperatures, a light rain and a strong wind.

O'Meara's first shot was lost in the gorse, he made a quadruple-bogey 8 and was on his way to an 81. The scores were largely good.

Casey, who will celebrate his 40th birthday on Friday, headed the challenge for a first English victor since 1992 ahead of compatriots Ian Poulter and Richard Bland, who were part of a five-strong group on three under par. It was a businesslike day in more ways than one for Thomas, who wore a tie loosely draped around his neck and a cardigan sweater.

A party has the right to stop its workers and workers have the right to decide what they want to do. He set up his own party Rashtriya Janata Party (RJP) and later merged it with the Congress.

The 24-year-old who impressed at the US Open, carding a nine-under 63 tournament record in the third round, was another PGA Tour player who relished the challenge.

Hideki Matsuyama was among those at 68.

Koepka didn't seem to miss a beat from his four-shot victory at Erin Hills, even if he barely touched a club.

Koepka considers himself the consummate gamer, though.

"It was just fun to get back playing again", he said. He was itching to get back to competition, and after arriving last weekend at Royal Birkdale to learn the course, he proved to be a quick study.

Whether he and Spieth had the lead depended on the late starts, particularly Matt Kuchar, who made the turn at 5-under 29.

The two-time major victor, who won at the Travelers Championship last month, was particularly pleased with his composure and driving off the tee. Phil Mickelson had a birdie-less round on Thursday, the first time that's happened to him since 1999 in the first round at Carnoustie, 18 years ago...

"We had planned to take it off so it's not a big deal", said Koepka, who is trying to become the first person since Tiger Woods in 2000 to win the US Open and Open in the same year.
