Ashley Madison to pay huge sum in compensation to data hack victims

Ashley Madison to pay huge sum in compensation to data hack victims

The owner of the Ashley Madison adultery website said on Friday it will pay US$11.2 million to settle U.S. litigation brought on behalf of roughly 37 million users whose personal details were exposed in a July 2015 data breach.

The site is known for encouraging infidelity and targeting people seeking affairs, so the public exposure of confidential users data obviously caused quite a stir when it was revealed by hackers in July 2015. While the company was quick to say there was no proof the leaked was accurate - and there were several cases where users obviously employed fake names - the fallout was massive. An anonymous user filed a class-action lawsuit against the site's parent company, Avid Life Media, alleging that it had failed to take "necessary and reasonable precautions" to protect its user data. Meaning that even if a person's name did appear in the data dump, they might not have been an Ashley Madison member, apparently.

The release suggested that Ruby "denies any wrongdoing", but states that the parties have agreed to the proposed settlement in order to avoid uncertainty, expense and inconvenience associated with continued litigation.

Bruce Redding, who has lived in the home for 25 years and inherited it from his mom, said he was "shaking" when he heard the news. He was told the SUV sped down Mimika Avenue to where that street ends in a T-intersection in front of his home.

According to Friday's settlement, users with valid claims can recoup up to $3,500 depending on how well they can document their losses attributable to the breach. For instance, users who present valid claims that the breach resulted in identity theft could receive up to $2,000 for the claim.

The company also notes that since the July 2015 breach it has implemented numerous remedial measures to enhance the security of its customers' data, such as requiring mandatory security training for employees, provide the full delete service for no charge, and completed a comprehensive third-party review of protections now in place.
