Could AG Sessions get his Senate job back? Alabamians weigh in

One of them, Rep. Mo Brooks, on Wednesday announced that he would drop out of the race if the other GOP contenders would do so as well so that Sessions could become the Republican nominee to get his old Senate seat back if he is fired by Trump.

Meanwhile, he continued yesterday his support for what is likely the most undemocratic legislative coup in history. Democrats Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Richard Blumenthal of CT said Thursday they are among the senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee who are working with Graham on the effort.

"No president likes Congress to tie their hands", said Sen. "Right now, I have no reason to believe Mueller is compromised".

On Thursday evening, a group of senators that included Graham and John McCain, R-Ariz., faced television cameras inside the Capitol to make an unusual declaration: They would vote for the health-care bill in the Senate only if they were assured by House Republican leaders that they would not in turn pass it into law.

And the The Washington Post reports that White House officials have been throwing around ideas for replacements. Second, the idea is to send anything, anything at all, to the House so that there can be a conference to meld the two bills - essentially a complete collapse of Senate responsibility and a cave-in to accept nearly wholesale the horrific House bill and rush it to Trump for his signature. Lawmakers in September will have to confront a possible government shutdown and federal default.

Brooks said the White House was "split on this issue", and a Republican strategist close to Brooks described a divide between the "nationalist wing" of the White House aligned with Steve Bannon that might support him and the "establishment" wing aligned more closely with Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who they view as more supportive of McConnell's wishes.

Brooks added that if he won the special election, he would not vote for Kentucky Republican Sen. LESSON: Republicans' failure to stand up to Trump early dooms his presidency, crashes the GOP. "My read of him and the people around him is probably, in the end, it will be calm and we'll move forward", he said.

Interestingly, however, Rudy Giuliani - a fervent supporter of the President and past contender for the post Sessions now holds - told CNN he thought Sessions had made the right decision recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation. A subsequent tweet Tuesday accused Sessions of taking "a VERY weak position" on investigating Clinton and leakers of intelligence secrets. A spokeswoman for Sessions did not comment, but odd fired back in an emailed statement to Morning Consult Wednesday afternoon.

Sessions has seen an outpouring of support this week from his former colleagues in the Senate, where he served for two decades. "I really don't think so". They don't work for the president; they work for the people.

Meanwhile, key lawmakers have voiced confidence in Mueller.

As for the firing of Comey, Sessions said that he made the recommendation based on concerns about Comey's leadership, as well as concerns outlined in a memo by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who detailed apprehension about Comey's handling of the Clinton email scandal. He said firing Mueller "would precipitate a firestorm that would be unprecedented in proportions".

Blumenthal said that the bill "might be a committee effort" and said that it would protect Mueller and other special counsels. "Let me say, if such a situation arises, Democrats would use every tool in our toolbox to stymie such a recess appointment".

Republicans are finally speaking up now that Trump is going after Jeff Sessions, a right-winger who is pushing his own hateful agenda.
