Indian-Origin man executed for trafficking drugs

In April 2012, Prabagaran Srivijayan was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint.

His death sentence carried out at Singapore's Changi Prison Complex, said the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

His lawyers had previously filed for an application with the Appellate Court in Putrajaya for the case to brought up to the International Court of Justice.

According to The Star, the city-state's court of appeal had rejected an application by the 29-year-old's lawyers, saying Prabagaran had received due process and that the application was an "abuse of process".

Prabagaran Srivijayan was sentenced to death by a Singapore court in 2014, after he was caught with 22.24 grams of diamorphine drug while entering the country.

He had however claimed that the vehicle he was driving belonged to other individuals and that he was not aware of the presence of the drugs in the auto.

Prabagaran, who had said he was unaware that the two bundles were in his auto, claimed trial on a charge of importing heroin of more than 15g, which carries the death penalty.

We'll just see very slow moving heavy rains with lots of lightning and occasional small, mainly pea sized hail. Another round of showers and storms is likely Friday before this storm system finally kicks through the area.

He told FMT the appeals court had ruled that Singapore is a sovereign nation and that it would not wait for the outcome of proceedings in Malaysia.

"No judiciary of one country interferes in the judicial process of another country", he said.

Prabagaran Srivijayan's legal team have raised serious concerns about the fairness of his trial, including the authorities' failure to follow up leads and call on key witnesses that would corroborate his version of events.

S. Prabagaran, the Malaysian who was executed in Singapore on Friday for drug trafficking accepted his fate but always maintained his innocence till the end. "Furthermore, the death penalty is not mandatory for drug-related offences under domestic law", the OHCHR said. CNB said that 22.24 grams of diamorphine is equivalent to about 1,853 straws, which is sufficient to feed the addiction of about 265 abusers for a week.

At present, 103 countries have abolished the death penalty for all crimes and 141 are abolitionist in law or practice.

Malaysia also uses capital punishment, executing murderers and drug traffickers by hanging.
