Indian premier calls for action against cow vigilantism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, July 16, came down heavily on cow vigilantes who project themselves as self-styled cow protecters.

This is the second time that the Prime Minister has taken a tough stand on cow vigilantism.

According to the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, who briefed media persons, Prime Minister also said that state governments should take action against such people.

India's Supreme Court on July 11 overturned a government decree on the trade of cattle for slaughter, an order that threatened the country's multi-billion dollar meat and leather industry dominated by Muslims. Also, the Parliament session saw a great deal of dignity given to all the members and no such chaos was said to have occurred that day, which is again on a plus scenario for a better sophistication that is getting established in Indian Politics, quite gradually. Both parties said their MPs were preoccupied with work.

Rebuking the incidents of cow vigilantism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday warned gau rakshaks of strict action, urging state governments to keep the "anti-social elements" under check.

That could possibly be why the prime minister simply put the onus of controlling cow vigilantes and bringing the guilty to justice to state governments. While a joint meeting of Opposition leaders is slated on Tuesday for putting in place their strategy for the session, other issues like the flood situation particularly in Assam and other North-Eastern States, violence over Gorkhaland, fallout of demonetisation, job losses and disinvestment of PSUs are also likely to be raised.

Officials further said that they will probe the matter further.

Modi also mentioned the presidential poll to be held tomorrow and said it would have been very good had a consensus been reached on the candidate.

Mr. Modi also called upon all parties to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Quit India movement, which falls on August 9.

Modi also thanked everyone for the implementation of the GST, calling it a "shining example of co-operative federalism".

Besides all party meetings convened by the Government and Lok Sabha Speaker, Leaders of ruling NDA will meet this evening to chalk out their strategy in Parliament. The Trinamool Congress did not attend the meeting. TMC has already announced it would boycott this meeting amidst recriminations between it and the BJP over the recent violence in West Bengal.
