Israeli and French leaders commemorate deportation

Israeli and French leaders commemorate deportation

French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday assured visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of his "vigilance" regarding the 2015 nuclear accord reached by Western powers with Iran.

Thirteen thousand Jewish citizens of France were arrested during the Vel d'Hiv roundup in July 1942, as part of the Nazi effort to eradicate French Jewry.

Like several of his predecessors, he accepts France's responsibility for the deportations, admitting that the Vichy regime actively organized them.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a resumption of long-stalled peace talks between Israel and Palestine based on a two-state solution.

About 76,000 Jews were arrested in France during World War Two and transported in appalling conditions in railway boxcars to concentration camps such as Auschwitz, where most died.

After attending a Holocaust commemoration event with Netanyahu, Macron also appealed for renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks which have been suspended for three years.

French expert on the Palestinian cause Jean-Paul Chagnollaud said that "France's stance is still somewhat vague on the matter".

It remains unclear, however, whether Macron will follow the more interventionist approach taken by his predecessor Francois Hollande, whose efforts to mobilize the global community on the question infuriated Israel.

Netanyahu thanked also the French President for hosting him in this tragic anniversary and stressed the deep and old friendship between the French and Israeli states.

Macron said on Sunday that France was ready to apply diplomatic levers toward renewed negotiations, but gave no specifics.

Two leaders also discussed fighting extremism in Syria and elsewhere, and improving economic cooperation.

"We called for this protest and we protest President Macron's invitation to Netanyahu and his rolling out of the red carpet to a criminal, a torturer - the torture of men and children exists - to a land thief, to someone who does not respect worldwide law or human rights, which is embarrassing", she said.

Macron said he would visit Israel "in the coming months", at the invitation of the Israeli prime minister.
