His passenger, 34-year-old Bethany Root, also had close ties to the Kansas aviation community.

The plane that crashed is believed to be the P-51 Mustang "Baby-Duck" that Lenoch flew at the Amelia Earhart Festival Saturday night. After college, he worked at the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company in Seattle as a 747 instructor. Root was the general manager at the airport, and had a passion for aviation, according to the local fox4 website. He was most recently flying a corporate Citation jet for a private company in IL, according to the foundation bio.

A lifelong aviator, Lenoch was the consummate pilot, instructor and airshow performer. He was married with three children, the online bio said. She managed Amelia Earhart Airport, where the fatal flight originated.
