Nurses refuse to budge, bent on strike

The High Court, which was hearing a petition filed by an association of private hospital managements, stated that nurses were playing with the lives of people through their protests. "We are not limiting our services and we have urged the government to ensure a situation so that we can run the hospital. We had not faced such a crisis in the past five years", said Dr Harish Pillai, president of the Association of Healthcare Providers of India - Kerala.

Hospital managements have said they would be able to provide only emergency services from Monday in view of the strike call.

The Kerala High Court on Friday prohibited the indefinite strike from July 17 by nurses in various private hospitals demanding higher wages.

The government's Industrial Relations Committee on Monday fixed the salary of the nurses based on the bed strength of hospitals, but the demand to fix basic pay at Rs 20,000 for all categories of hospitals was not addressed.

Joe Hart has had West Ham United medical, could join today
Rafa Benitez has already lost out on keeper Willy Caballero to Chelsea and failed to sign Pepe Reina from Napoli. The London team have reportedly beaten Newcastle to Hart and are close to finalising a deal.

However, the United Nurses Association (UNA) said that if its demands for higher wages were not accepted during the talks to be held on July 19, it would continue with the stir.

"The proposed indefinite strike by the nursing unions in a large number of hospitals will cripple emergency services, operation theatres, Intensive Care Units and dialysis units of many hospitals". "It is unfortunate the nurses have resorted to such a drastic step like complete boycotting of services, especially when the healthcare sector is overburdened due to seasonal fever-associated illness".

"We have decided not to shut down hospitals but to offer the best available treatment facilities with the available staff", said Hussain Koya Thangal, state secretary of KPHA.
