Patrick Rodgers takes 2-stroke lead in John Deere Classic

Charles Howell III and Ollie Schniederjans each shot 8-under-par 63's on Thursday to share the first-round lead at the PGA's John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois.

Seeking his first PGA Tour victory, Rodgers holed eight birdies and only dropped one shot at the last to be 13 under at the halfway stage of the tournament.

The 25-year-old is yet to secure his first PGA Tour victory, yet a seven-under-par 64 in IL saw him take a two-stroke buffer over fellow American Bryson DeChambeau. "It was tricky with some breeze, but I know 13 under is not going to win the golf tournament".

Howell, playing for a third consecutive week after returning from a 10-week layoff for a fractured rib, booked a spot in next week's British Open with his latest second-place effort.

His first bogey of the week came at his 36th hole, the par-four ninth, where he felt he fell victim to the golfing gods.

"I can't believe the temperatures". It was a great day. If we're going to be doing this for 15 more years, I'm not too anxious about the first couple years.

Chesson Hadley (64), Chad Campbell (68), Kevin Tway (63) and J.J. Henry (64) are a stroke further back at nine under.

Tway had nine birdies in a 10-hole stretch en route to the best round of the day. "My putter and I spent a lot of time together".

"It kind of lingered and I tried to play through it, and then ended up taking like 15 days off without hitting a ball and still is sort of there", Schniederjans said. "Some were easy and some were good putts".

Bubba Watson and Davis Love III (139) were tied for 55th, and three-time John Deere Classic champion Steve Stricker (140) was tied for 70th.
