Rail service between New Jersey-New York back after delay

Rail service between New Jersey-New York back after delay

And according to Amtrak, the track repairs that it's now administering in the tunnels between ny and New Jersey are going better than expected, too.

The so far, so good Summer of Hell at Penn Station hit a major road bump Saturday when two trains lost power, stranding more than 700 riders - and one of the rescue trains sent to help also stalled.

"This seems to be an electrical issue", an Amtrak spokesman said.

The train with about 600 passengers was delayed right before entering Penn Station at 4:45 p.m. PATH stations in New Jersey, along with the commuter hub at Brooklyn's Atlantic Terminal, are just some of the places that have seen an uptick in commuters since Monday. The train was briefly disabled near the tunnel outside of Penn Station due to overhead wire problems.

Amtrak travel between NY and New Jersey was briefly suspended, but had resumed on Amtrak rails by 1:15 p.m.

Amtrak officials said the first week of track work in Penn Station New York has gone "very well" and is even slightly ahead of schedule.

"Work accomplished includes installing two new track switches between the Hudson River tunnels and Penn Station platforms, dismantling two other switches to be replaced next week, and replacing half of a track 'diamond" which is part of a junction, he said.

Amtrak's chief operations officer called the first week of summer-long track work and corresponding schedule cutbacks for commuters a success.

Saturday's malfunction has nothing to do with the rehab project, officials said.
