Sensex rises 200 points, Nifty nears 10k-mark

Sensex surged over 100 points to 32,135.91, a fresh all-time high, while the NSE benchmark Nifty added almost 25 points scale a fresh high of 9,939.30 despite weakness across other Asian shares. Earlier, the Sensex hit a record high of 32,232 and the Nifty 9969.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 0.15 per cent lower in Friday's trade. Nifty, meanwhile, was incing closer to the 10,000 mark and was trading at 9,961, which is 46 points higher.

All the sectoral indices, led by IT, oil & gas, bank and PSU, were trading in the positive zone with gains up to 0.51 percent. Japan's Nikkei, however, fell 0.86 percent. On Wednesday and Thursday, the markets struggled to regain the record high levels that they had reached last Monday.

When referred to China's demand that status quo be restored in Dokalam, he had said India has also been asking for it. The ministry reportedly warned that India should not harbour illusions about defeating the Chinese military.

Both Indian benchmark indices opened strong on Monday, with both hitting new lifetime highs. Both the indices, however, started surging soon after with the Sensex gaining more than 200 points to post a new record high of 32,232.63.

Shares of ITC (up 1.70 per cent) stood among top gainers in the Nifty FMCG index amid reports that it has hiked cigarette prices by 6-7 per cent across all categories in the wake of hike in cess that GST Council announced on July 17. Other shares that gained up to 8 per cent included Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Vijaya Bank, HPCL, Fortis Healthcare among others.
