Spieth joins Nicklaus with wild Open win

Spieth joins Nicklaus with wild Open win

I thought if I could make a couple more on the back nine, then it's going to be a great score. Amid thousands of people, the golf course was suddenly a very lonely place. Spieth then delivered his second bogey-free round of the week in which he never came seriously close to a bogey.

The best caddies know what to say and when to say it, and Greller struck the right tone on the first, seventh and 13th holes, giving Spieth a boost when he needed it most. But I'm not sure we've seen anything quite like what we saw in the final round at Royal Birkdale on Sunday.

"I was getting it down on myself and this is as much mine as it is his, and he deserves every credit he gets so thank you Mikey". This is absolutely a dream come true. "It feels good to have this in my hands". If not, I can sleep during the day - we don't tee off until pretty late.

"I have no idea how I shot one-under today".

This Open title is also redemption for that fateful Masters Sunday previous year, when Spieth's hopes of back-to-back Green Jackets, both leading from start-to-finish, drowned in Rae's Creek on the 12th hole in the final round.

That year he had a shot at the third leg of an unprecedented calendar Grand Slam, missing out on an Open playoff by one shot at St. Andrews.

Spieth shot a five-under-par 65 on Saturday, and ended the day with a three-stroke lead over his compatriot Matt Kuchar, with Canadian Austin Connelly and American Brooks Koepka both six shots off the lead.

Spieth made his putt to finish with a bogey that will go down in Open lore.

"I just played really stable on my first nine, nothing like a fancy shot, and everything started to come together on my eighth hole".

Don't misinterpret what I am saying, though, because Spieth isn't the next Tiger Woods.

President Donald Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn , resigned after lying about contacts with Kislyak. Kislyak, who was appointed to his post in 2008, is regularly spotted walking around town, heading to and from meetings.

Spieth sliced his tee shot nearly 50 metres right, over a tall sand dune near the driving range.

He then brilliantly sank a 45-yard putt to eagle the par-five 15th and followed that with birdies on the 16th and 17th to banish any thought of a repeat of his U.S. Masters meltdown past year.

Someday, perhaps very soon, there will be a plaque at Royal Birkdale for Jordan Spieth, much like the one off the 16th hole that celebrates Arnold Palmer and the 6-iron he slashed out of the rough in 1961 to usher in a new era of golf.

The birdie brought him back level with Kuchar and he took the lead with an incredible 35ft putt for an eagle on the par-five 15th. The Open has required a playoff to settle its champion five times since the turn of the millennium and 21 times overall in 145 years before this one.

He will be playing in the final group of the fourth round at a major for the first time, and the 39-year-old Kuchar sounded up for the occasion.

Willett, who has toiled since beating Spieth to the green jacket at Augusta, was handed the first tee time today at 7.55am and shot 71.

China's Li Haotong finished third on six-under-par after a superb last-round 63 left him on the range hoping, in vain, that a few more bogeys from the leading pair might give him a shot at a playoff. "But having been in unplayable situations before, I just asked the question, is the driving range out of bounds?"

He, like the rest of us, didn't anticipate the story Jordan would produce over the next week holes - but he will go down in the history books.

With rounds of 71, 73, 69 and 73, Plant completes his final year as an amateur by celebrating his name being among some of the greatest in the game.
