Avoid bomb flash: Guam issues emergency guidelines for potential nuclear attack

American and South Korean officials said they would move forward with large-scale military exercises later this month that North Korea claims are a rehearsal for war.

North Korea has announced a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to U.S. bombers.

US President Donald Trump said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was not going to get away with his "horrific" comments and disrespecting America.

No one really knows how close or how far we are from a possible nuclear conflict with North Korea. If it were drawn into a military conflict between North Korea and the U.S., China's economy could be devastated - the U.S.is its single largest trading partner, making up 18% of overall global trade. Most recently, in March 2013, North Korean military officials made a statement about Andersen Air Force Base being within "striking range". Its natives are USA citizens by birth.

The drill coincides with the four-day "Ulji Freedom Guardian" military manoeuvres on August 21-24, which are held yearly and include joint exercises by the US and South Korean armed forces, as well as drills for emergencies. The U.S. took control of Guam in 1898, when Spanish authorities surrendered to the U.S. Navy. About 7,000 US soldiers and their families live on the island, which has a population of 160,000, according to the Associated Press. While already taking up 30 percent of the island, the American military has been seeking to increase its presence by relocating to Guam thousands of Marines who are now based in Okinawa, Japan. The information was later denied by the Sputnik source in the Eastern Military District.

The U.S. set up the Naval Station in Guam in 1899, designating the whole island as a base. Many refugees fleeing Vietnam were evacuated through Guam. Spain officially handed over the land under the Treaty of Paris. Japan seized it for about 2½ years during World War II.

In October 2006, an unofficial spokesman for North Korea in Japan told ABC Radio Australia that Guam, Japan and Hawaii were potential targets if the United Nations levied tougher sanctions against North Korea.

Such threats are why the Americans are on Guam to begin with. Residents do not pay US income taxes or vote in the general election for USA president.

In addition to the military presence, Guam also relies heavily on tourism to boost its economy, attracting more than 1.5 million visitors drawn to its pristine beaches and luxury resorts in 2016.

The U.S. took back control of Guam on July 21, 1944. Hawaii is about 4,000 miles (6,500 km) to the east. It covers a total of 210 square miles - approximately the size of Chicago.

Its population is mostly Roman Catholic and about a third are Chamorro, descendants of the indigenous people Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan first encountered in 1521. About 24 percent are Filipino, 18 percent identify as several races, 7 percent are white, and 10 percent are of other Micronesian descent.

On June 5, 2015, Guam became the first US territory to legalize same-sex marriage. The U.S. recaptured the territory three years later.
