Cassie Sainsbury's Plea Deal Rejected

Cassie Sainsbury's Plea Deal Rejected

Ms Sainsbury would have served a six-year sentence under the failed plea deal.

Australian drug mule Cassie Sainsbury is about to find out if a plea deal struck with Colombian prosecutors will be accepted by the Bogata judge hearing her case.

The Australian woman was arrested in Bogota in April carrying 5.8 kilograms of cocaine hidden in her luggage, worth about U.S. $1 million.

Sainsbury told the judge that she needed $10,000 and so she contacted a man named Nathan through a website in Hong Kong.

Sainsbury was arrested in April at Bogota's global airport after an X-ray machine detected cocaine hidden in 18 different packages stashed in her luggage.

The plea bargain had previously been postponed after she claimed last month that she was forced to smuggle drugs because her family was being threatened.

Sainsbury was intercepted by authorities and arrested at El Dorado International Airport, where she was allegedly carrying 5.8 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside 18 headphone boxes in her suitcase. "One is that the prosecution and the defence can return to negotiate", he said.

Sainsbury's Bogota lawyer, Orlando Herran, said she ignored the advice of both her legal team and her family to accept the six-year deal.

Sainsbury was supported in court by mother Lisa Evans and fiance Scott Broadbridge, as well as Australian consular officials.
