Gay marriage to be debated in Senate

If there is a majority "yes" vote in the $122 million poll, the parliament would debate and vote on a private member's bill to change marriage laws in the final sittings for the year.

"Obviously I will be voting no".

"In the five years we worked on this case, decision after decision has affirmed that principle in the field of marriage and divorce, and now the global human rights system is slowly moving closer to that view too".

"If you don't like same-sex marriage: vote no".

"If you're anxious about religious freedom and freedom of speech, vote "No", and if you don't like political correctness, vote "No" because voting "No" will help to stop political correctness in its tracks", Abbott told reporters outside Parliament Wednesday morning.

The conservative government on Wednesday chose a postal vote after a proposed national plebiscite, which it took to elections past year, was knocked back in the upper house over opposition concerns it would spark divisive debate. Challenging the postal vote would avert the "human cost" of LGBTI people hearing debate about "whether or not [their identity] is worthwhile and whether they deserve equal rights", he said.

"Instead of respecting the expressed will of the elected representatives of the Australian people, the government is attempting to subvert the will of parliament and force a public vote", said Brady.

Mr Abbott: "If you don't like political correctness, vote no, because this is the best way to stop it in its tracks".

Annie Leblanc also races in the 800-meter heats while Cyrus Hostetler competes in the qualification round for the javelin. Karsten Warholm became the first Norwegian man to win a world championships race, clocking 48.35 in the 400m hurdles.

The Senate will likely vote on the issue this week, with the Government committing to a voluntary postal ballot from mid-September if plans for a compulsory-attendance plebiscite on November 25 don't make the cut.

The plebiscite was first raised as a possibility at a meeting of the Liberal National Coalition in August 2015, where then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott promised the national vote after the 2016 election.

Former Liberal turned Australian Conservatives leader Cory Bernardi will table the petition in the senate on the ACL's behalf today.

"This is a disrespect to the Parliament of the nation where our laws are made".

"What we didn't want to happen in 2004 was for the courts to start adjudicating on the definition of marriage". Particularly from advocacy groups who may be taking the issue to the High Court to challenge the postal vote going ahead.

"I'm profoundly disappointed that we weren't able to do it now because I think the issue will continue to drag on", he said.

"Here is the workers' party saying to their parliamentary representatives that if you don't tow the line, we'll sack you". If you believe in free speech: vote yes.

Same sex marriage requires a change to the Marriages Act. The legislation was introduced by the government but voted down by the Labour opposition, the Greens and Nick Xenophon Team (NXT), who claimed the public vote at more than 120 million Australian dollars ($95 million) was an expensive waste of time.
