HBO offers $250000 to hackers, here's why

The $250,000 sum is also well short of the "six months salary" request made in the video letter by the hacker, who claims to make $12-15 million per year.

Regardless of whether HBO meant to follow through with its US$250,000 offer, the e-mail on Friday raised questions among security professionals about the importance of the data and whether HBO's reaction might encourage future attacks.

The July 27 e-mail was sent by John Beyler, an HBO executive who thanked the hackers for "making us aware" of previously unknown security vulnerabilities. The message from HBO, dated July 27, features the network's offer to make a "bounty payment" of $250,000 as part of a program in which "white hat IT professionals" are rewarded for "bringing these types of things to our attention".

HBO declined to comment on the leaked message to Variety, but the publication confirmed the veracity of the email with someone close to the investigation.

The hack follows attacks on Netflix, where a hacker demanded a ransom in exchange for not leaking episodes of Orange is the New Black. "In the spirit of professional cooperation, we are asking you to extend your deadline for one week".

Walkup said she wouldn't hold it against Mama C's if she or her children get sick. The restaurant remains closed for deep cleaning on Wednesday.

"This episode of the HBO hack is turning out to be a "Game of Thorns" for HBO". "That's a very, very small amount in these kinds of negotiations".

About a fortnight back, hackers broke into HBO's servers and stole a staggering 1.5 terabytes of data including five draft scripts of the seventh season of Game of Thrones as well as the personal numbers and addresses, home and email both, of the cast members of season 7 including Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, and Kit Harington.

Variety earlier reported details about the $250,000 offer.

HBO has said it was working with forensic experts and law enforcement in response to the attack.
