Here's the latest twist in the HBO hacker/Game of Thrones leaking saga

In what appears to be an embarrassment tactic, the HBO hackers - known collectively as "Mr. Smith" - released an email sent to them by HBO offering $250,000 as a "bug bounty payment". The hackers have yet to receive their money, which is why they leaked a purported email exchange with an HBO exec to Hollywood Reporter.

The unnamed HBO exec told hackers that the company has "been working hard since [July 23] to review all of the material that you have made available to us". HBO is not negotiating with the hackers, and the email was merely an attempt to buy some time, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday citing "a person familiar with the matter".

The HBO Game of Thrones hack saga continues with new revelations about the massive cyber attack. The memo also asks that the ransom deadline set by the hacker be pushed back one week so the necessary amount of bitcoin may be secured. Because the same hacker leaked the memo, HBO sent. To date, they have released only 3.4 GB of data from the initial hack of 1.5 TB.

The leak of the most recent episode of Game of Thrones didn't do hurt the audience numbers, at least as much as some may have expected.

So far, however, the HBO leaks have been limited, falling well short of the chaos inflicted on Sony in 2014.

Thus far, companies have largely declined to negotiate with hackers, in part for fear of setting a precedent of paying them off.

Specifically, the hackers demanded "our six-month salary in bitcoin" and claimed they earned 12-15 million dollars a year (£9m-£11.5m) from blackmailing organisations whose networks they have penetrated. "We have weeks of negotiations with HBO officials, but they broke their promises and want to play with us".
