London Underground will have 4G within the next few years

Your commute could soon get a whole lot better: 4G internet is finally coming to the London Underground over the next few years.

The work is expected to be announced Thursday by the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan as part of a package of measures created to tout and improve the capital's digital connectivity, the news outlet said.

'That means working to boost connectivity across London - tackling not-spots, delivering connectivity in the London Underground and working with local authorities to provide digital infrastructure fitting of a global tech hub'.

To help tackle the issue of connectivity on a borough by borough basis the Mayor has formed what is being described as a "Not-Spot Team" that will be on the ground helping local boroughs modernise their connectivity infrastructure.

The announcement is part of a major drive by the Mayor's office to boost the capital's digital connectivity by increasing overall internet speeds and eradicating the city's known areas of poor connectivity. The summit is created to help London's local authorities apply for the government's Digital Infrastructure funding to help ease the financial burden of making such vast improvements to their constituency.

ICAO must demand 'unconditional opening of airspace'
The economic action has put Qatar Airways in a hard position having to take longer, more expensive routes to destinations. ICAO recently said Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates had agreed to open some of its airspace to Qatari aircraft.

Transport for London (TfL) began installing Wi-Fi in Tube stations in 2012, but this only provides a signal to customers on platforms, in ticket halls or on stationary trains in the station.

Khan's appointed "Not-Spot" teams will work with local authorities and providers, in poor connectivity areas, to identify and deliver solutions to improve the area connection.

When the new Elizabeth Line launches at the end of 2018, it will have mobile signal from the get-go, but trying to extend this to the Victorian-era tunnels is a major infrastructure challenge, and delays are likely (something Tube passengers are already used to).

But now that they're taking care of London, it would be great if the powers that be could hurry along the connectivity improvements in the rest of the country.
