North Korea tensions continue to weigh on global stocks

USA and Asian stocks plunged overnight, with investors instead fleeing to safe haven assets including German government bonds, among the best-rated and most liquid assets in the world.

After touching a more than two-month high at $1,291.86, spot gold last added 0.2 percent to $1,288.81 an ounce.

South Korea's KOSPI fell 1.7 per cent on Friday to its lowest since May 24, but its losses for the week were a relatively modest 3.2 per cent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 94.55 points, or 0.43 per cent, to 21,954.15, the S&P 500 lost 19.51 points, or 0.79 per cent, to 2,454.51 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 76.39 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 6,275.94.

It is "a bullish sign that the equity markets are rebounding somewhat on a Friday, in spite of the fact that investors will need to wait for two days to react to any geopolitical news that comes out over the weekend", said Robert Phipps, a director at Per Stirling Capital Management in Austin, Texas.

US DATA: The other potential driver in markets will be upcoming USA economic data, including monthly inflation figures, which could go a long way to determining expectations for the pace at which the Federal Reserve raises interest rates.

FINANCIALS FALLING: Several financial sector companies also helped pull down the market. At this level, the benchmark is on track for its lowest close since late June, according to FactSet data.

LONDON 2017: Sally Pearson wins gold in 100-metre hurdles
She controlled the race from there, winning in 12.59 seconds ahead of long-time rival Dawn-Harper Nelson (12.63). Pearson broke her wrist in 2015 and missed the 2016 Olympic Games with achilles and hamstring injuries.

The dollar weakened after news that United States producer prices unexpectedly fell in July, recording their biggest drop in almost a year and pointing to a further moderation in inflation that could delay a Federal Reserve interest rate increase.

Toyota rose 0.63 percent to 6,275 yen while Sony fell 1.45 percent to 4,338 yen. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks gave up 19 points, or 1.4 percent, to 1,377.

"I do think I expect inflation to also start to move higher in the medium term but probably not get all the way back to 2-percent on a year-over-year basis, because, remember, we've had these very weak inflation readings for a number of month", Dudley said.

In other energy futures trading, wholesale gasoline rose 1 cent to $1.61 a gallon, while heating oil was little changed at $1.63 a gallon.

But then oil prices succumbed to the overall selling pressure for risky assets, aided by an OPEC report showing crude production by cartel members increased slightly in July, including Saudi Arabia, which had championed efforts by the organization and its allies to extend an output freeze.

United States gold futures gained 0.2% to $1,292.70. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 was down 1.13%.
