NYT Issues Correction in Climate Change Story

Its members said President Donald Trump and his cabinet have avoided talking about the science of climate change.

The hottest year on record before the report was 2015. The amount of additional warming coming from human activity - mostly burning of coal, oil and gas - is more than 40 times stronger than changes in the sun's heat.

Scientists familiar with both drafts said there was no substantive difference between them.

According to the annual, peer-reviewed State of the Climate report, it was also a year of other extremes and records, including the highest sea levels and lowest sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctica. That assessment calls into question the wisdom of Trump's environmental and energy policies, which seek to boost US production and consumption of fossil fuels even as the world's other leading economies promote cleaner sources of energy.

The draft, a special science section of the Congressionally-mandated quadrennial National Climate Assessment (NCA), has been given to Trump's political appointees for review.

The supposedly-leaked and suppressed report had, in fact, been publicly available for months before the New York Times reported its "scoop" - forcing the Times to publish a correction to its story.

Federal policies that determine the use of Federal Emergency Management funding and the laws that are set regarding industries with high carbon emissions will no doubt be affect by the position the Trump administration takes regarding climate change.

She then declined to comment on the report.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders slammed the Times for not reaching out to the White House press office for comment before publishing the Tuesday report.

Congress has passed legislation calling for a National Climate Assessment every four years. Making temperature predictions far into the future has proven to be nothing more than speculation, and goes against the principles of scientific integrity.

The year 2016 was the warmest on record for the planet as a whole, surpassing temperature records that date back 137 years, according to an annual report compiled by scientists around the globe. Today, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said 2017 is on track to be the second warmest for the United States.

Greenhouse gas concentrations were up.

Local officials aren't the only ones trying to cope with the effects of climate change. Last week, Trump's administration formally told the United Nations that the USA intends to pull out of the global climate accord signed in 2015, in which almost 200 nations pledged to reduce carbon emissions.

"On Monday, all three networks pounced on the story, speculating about the Trump administration's nefarious plans".

A scientist who authored the report tweeted quote, "BBC asked me if I leaked our climate science report to the media".

"These comments reflect the utterances of someone who either doesn't have the faintest understanding of the science, or has total contempt for scientific truth", Michael Mann, climatologist, geophysicist and director of Penn State's Earth System Science Center, told Gizmodo.
