Possible delays at Brisbane Airport

The call by Mr Carmody and other aviation security experts came amid mayhem at the nation's airports as thousands of travellers were confronted with long delays on Monday.

Travellers were met with lengthy delays at airports around the country as police and airlines conducted extra security checks.

"Given the additional screening requirements, we ask passengers to arrive at the terminal two hours before domestic flights and three hours before global flights".

"It may be that we need to look at the security settings at our airports - in particular our domestic airports - for an ongoing, enduring period", he said.

Qantas confirmed today passengers should arrive much earlier for domestic Australian flights in order to deal with new security protocols in place following police raids that authorities say disrupted a suspected terrorist cell plotting an attack on an aircraft.

"Given the additional screening requirements, we ask passengers to arrive at the terminal two hours before domestic flights and three hours before worldwide flights", the company said in a statement.

Speaking on the ABC, Justice Minister Michael Keenan had denied there's a heightened security risk due to the larger number of people arriving at airports at a specific time.

Australian Federal Police officers talk with passengers near the check-in counters at the Sydney Airport domestic terminal on Sunday.

'Be assured, we have the finest security and intelligence services in the world, ' Mr Turnbull said.

Canberra's reportedly been debating the idea for several months and it's likely the PM will push harder for the measures in the wake of the foiled terror plot in Sydney, targeting a flight headed for Abu Dhabi.

Homeland Security Asia/Pacific founder Roger Henning said the changes unveiled by the government amounted to "window dressing" and echoed the call for photo ID checks.

The increased security presence was ordered after counter-terrorism agencies arrested four men in Sydney on Saturday over allegedly Islamist-inspired plans to either blow up or somehow release poison gas on board a flight bound for the Middle East.

"Some of the measures will be obvious to the public, some will not be".
