The Sensex, which opened at 31,750.73 points, closed at 31,531.33 points - down 266.51 points, or 0.84 per cent, from its previous close at 31,797.84 points. Investors monitored geopolitical tensions surrounding North Korea that hit sentiment across the globe.

Meanwhile, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 269.60 points, or 0.85% to 31,528.24.

The BSE market breadth heavily favoured bears - with 2,181 declines and 390 advances. "Individual stocks also dragged the sentiment on poor June-quarter result show", Jasani added. In three consecutive sessions, these indices crashed more than 5 percent.

Major Sensex gainers on Thursday were: Infosys, up 1.35 per cent at Rs 982.50; Wipro, up 0.44 per cent at Rs 288; Tata Consultancy Services, up 0.37 per cent at Rs 2,511.25; Larsen and Toubro, up 0.30 per cent at Rs 1,159.50; and Mahindra and Mahindra, up 0.26 per cent at Rs 1,395.

Biggest losers in the 30-share index were Tata Motors (6.26%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.48%), ICICI Bank (1.22%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (1.15%), GAIL (India) (1.13%), and NTPC (1.12%).
