State Department Press Briefing on North Korea

U.S. Defense Secretary General James Mattis said on Thursday that the country's military is "ready" to counter the threat from North Korea.

The tragedy of war is well enough known.

Mattis's comments came shortly after President Donald Trump warned North Korea it should be "very, very nervous" if it thinks of attacking America, and doubled down on a vow to rain "fire and fury" on Pyongyang if it continued to threaten the US.

Trump has stated that he is prepared to engage in all-out war if North Korea launches its missiles.

Though not a direct response to the "fire and fury" statement, North Korea's army announced hours after that it was preparing a plan for missile strike on the US territory of Guam should Washington carry out military action against the DPRK. North Korea says it will "keep closely watching the speech and behavior of the U.S". "Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!"

When asked what options the USA has ready, Mattis declined to answer, saying instead, "I'm not going to tell the enemy what we're going to do".

Over the weekend, the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to add new sanctions on North Korea in response to its ballistic missile tests.

Military action should not be an option when confronting the problem of escalating tensions with North Korea, US Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney said in a statement.

"How often to do you see France, China, Russia, the USA voting unanimously on any issue?" he asked.
