Trump administration releases report confirming 2016 as hottest year since records began

In response to the past three years' record-breaking temperatures, authors of the new study calculated the likelihood of observing a three-year streak of record high temperatures since yearly global temperature records began in the late 19th century and the likelihood of seeing such a streak since 2000, when much of the warming has been observed.

Hurricane season could be the most active since 2010, according to research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center.

Global surface and sea temperatures, sea levels and greenhouse gases levels were all at record highs, it added.

The Earth set a series of dire records in 2016, including hottest year in modern times, highest sea level and most heat-trapping gases ever emitted, a global climate report said on Thursday.

Among the findings, the annual global surface temperature reached a record warmth for the third year in a row, ranging from 0.45° to 0.56° Celsius above the 1981-2010 average.

Before that, it was 2014.

Instead, the Japanese yen is now picking up steam against the USD, trading under ¥110 to the dollar for the first time since June. Japan is the world's biggest creditor country and there is an assumption investors there will repatriate funds in a crisis.

Report suggests U.S. is already feeling the impact of climate change Average temperatures throughout the United States have risen rapidly since 1980, according to a new report.

Mr Trump has previously dismissed climate change as "a hoax".

According to the report, the global annual average of atmospheric Carbon dioxide concentration was 402.9 parts per million (ppm) in 2016 and surpassed the 400ppm mark for the first time, when compared to ice core records dating back as far as 800,000 years. Global warmth records have been kept for the past 136 years. The global sea surface temperate broke a record high.

Global sea level was also the highest on record, at 82 millimeters higher than the average in 1993, when records began to be recorded with the current method. There are both natural and human events that make temperature changes cluster together, such as climate patterns like El Niño, the solar cycle and volcanic eruptions, according to Mann. The report is congressionally mandated every four years.

But as humanity continues to rely on fossil fuels for energy, unprecedented levels of greenhouse gases are polluting the atmosphere, acting like a blanket to capture heat around the Earth, the report emphasised.

The report was published in partnership with the NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, another government agency which describes itself as the US' leading authority for environmental information, and the American Meteorological Society.
