Trump Administration Sends Mixed Messages On North Korea

Trump Administration Sends Mixed Messages On North Korea

A shootout with North Korea would be "catastrophic", as pointed out this week, by U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

Mattis' comments follow President Donald Trump's threats against the rogue nation, according to CNN.

But the tension continued Friday when North Korea said Trump was "driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war" with his continued rhetoric.

"The American effort is diplomatically led, it has diplomatic traction, it is gaining diplomatic results and I want to stay right there right now", Mattis said the event.

North Korea successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile last month for the first time, and US intelligence agencies assess that Pyongyang is capable of producing a compact nuclear warhead and putting it atop a long-range missile. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has also sought to promote dialogue and diplomacy over military action.

"The tragedy of war is well-enough known it doesn't need another characterization beyond the fact that it would be catastrophic".

Trump earlier showed no contrition about his remark on Wednesday that aggression by North Korea would be met with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

Tropical Depression Eight forecast to become tropical storm Gert
It is located about 260 miles east of the southeastern Bahamas and is expected to become a Tropical Storm by this afternoon. Tropical Depression number eight formed overnight and is expected to become a Tropical Storm at some point on Sunday.

Tension in the region has risen since the reclusive North, which staged two nuclear bomb tests a year ago and launched two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July in defiance of world powers.

On Tuesday, Trump threatened North Korea with "fire and fury" if Pyongyang made any further threats against the United States.

The Northern Viper drills are one of the scheduled exercises that Japan's Self Defence Forces conducts regularly with their USA counterparts and are not a response to the latest tensions.

North Korea has unleashed personal attacks on past Washington and Seoul leaders. And despite Trump's public bluster, the USA has reportedly been carrying on quiet, back-channel negotiations with North Korea through that country's United Nations representatives.

Mattis also noted that the U.S.is also ready for a military conflict if it comes to that.

North Korea has announced a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to U.S. bombers, a move that if carried out would be its most provocative missile launch to date.
