United States officials says confrontation with NKorea not imminent

He played down the gravity of Trump's tweet Friday that the USA military is "locked and loaded" to respond to North Korea's threats.

US intelligence does not indicate an imminent nuclear war with North Korea, the chief of the Central Intelligence Agency said Sunday, after a week of bellicose rhetoric between the two sides.

He said the USA intelligence community has "a pretty good idea" about what's going on in North Korea.

"The United States military is always locked and loaded", he said.

Long-standing tensions over North Korea's nuclear programme worsened when it tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July.

He added that he was confident North Korea would continue to develop its missile capabilities under its leader Kim Jong-Un, "so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another test".

Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo and HR McMaster, Donald Trump's national security adviser, tried to provide assurances that a conflict is avoidable, while also supporting the president's tough talk.

"The president doesn't draw red lines", McMaster said on NBC's "Meet the Press".

These comments come following a week of verbal escalation between the United States and North Korea.

In response, Mr Trump said North Korea should expect "big, big trouble" if anything happened to Guam. China is the North's biggest economic partner and source of aid, but says it alone can't compel its wayward ally to end its nuclear and missile programs. It also said that the two "reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
