US officials say confrontation with North Korea not imminent

But Pompeo says on "Fox News Sunday" that North Korea's push to develop a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of hitting the United States "is a very serious threat and the administration is going to treat it as such". He said the usa has a "pretty good idea" of North Korea's intentions, but Pompeo declined to provide specifics.

"The United States military is always locked and loaded", he said.

"It's hard to put a timeline to these things", Pompeo said.

"But, make no mistake about it, the continuation, the increased chance that there will be a nuclear missile in Denver is a very serious threat", the head of the Central Intelligence Agency said, commenting that he is "quite confident" North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un will continue to advance his weapons programs.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says he's aiming to further develop a working relationship with his counterpart in China in order to lessen the risk of miscalculation on the Korean Peninsula as tensions rise between the US and North Korea. The CIA chief described Kim as "rational" and responsive to "adverse circumstances".

Joseph Dunford is traveling in Asia and is expected to meet with leaders in China, South Korea and Japan.

Four-midable Manchester United sweep West Ham aside in Premier League opener
Anthony Martial has now been directly involved in more Premier League goals (27) since 2015/16 than any other Man Utd player. Mkhitaryan plays a lovely first-time pass through to Martial and the Frenchman easily slots the ball under Hart.

"The president has made it very clear to the North Korean regime how America will respond if certain actions are taken", Pompeo told Chris Wallace, "We are hopeful that the leader of that country will understand them in precisely the way they are intended, to permit him a place to get where we can get the nuclear weapons off the peninsula".

"We're all looking to get out of this situation without a war", Dunford said. "President Trump has made it clear that it is his intention to protect the American people".

These comments come following a week of verbal escalation between the United States and North Korea. China is the North's biggest economic partner and source of aid, but says it alone can't compel its wayward ally to end its nuclear and missile programs. Donald Trump in particular has promised "fire and anger" at North Korea. It also said that the two "reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

But Trump on Friday appeared to set another red line - the mere utterance of threats - that would trigger a USA attack against North Korea and "big, big trouble" for Kim.

The tough talk capped a week in which long-standing tensions between the countries risked abruptly boiling over.

"Nothing is imminent. But be careful, the increased likelihood of a nuclear missile strikes the United States is a very risky threat", added the director of the u.s. central intelligence agency.
