Walmart CEO: Trump 'missed a criticial opportunity' to unite country

"Respect for the individual is one of our core beliefs at Walmart", wrote McMillon in an email to workers that was later published on Walmart's website.

"Our prayers are with the victims and their families".

McMillon said that the president's Monday remarks were a "step in the right direction".

Walmart did not respond immediately to a request on what McMillon thought when Trump subsequently blamed both sides for the violence in Charlottesville during an appearance Tuesday.

The chief executives for Merck, Under Armour and Intel and now the president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing have resigned from the informal panel.

Walmart's chief executive is the latest to speak out against President Donald Trump's response to violence by white supremacists in Charlottesville over the weekend.

Alliance president Scott Paul, in a tweet, said "I'm resigning from the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative because it's the right thing for me to do".

'He missed a critical opportunity': Walmart CEO slams Trump for failing to 'unequivocally' reject white supremacists

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously exited two White House advisory groups following Trump's pledge to withdraw from the Paris Accords on climate change.

Trump downplayed the resignations on Twitter Tuesday morning, saying there are "many to take their place".

On Monday, he released a second statement saying the White House condemns "in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on Monday".

The violence killed Heather Heyer, 32, of Charlottesville, and injured 19 others when a auto allegedly driven by James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, Ohio, rammed into a crowd in the city's mall area. He is being held in jail without bond.

During a press conference Tuesday afternoon at Trump Tower in NY, the president rejected McMillon's criticism, insisting his Saturday statement was "not at all" a missed opportunity. "When I make a statement, I like to be correct" - and as the investigation shows, the statement was "excellent", he said. However, unlike the other CEOs who have called out the President, McMillon is not planning to give up his seat on a White House advisory council.

McMillon continues his message saying that politicians, businesses, and communities can and should work together to address the "very hard issues" the country is facing. "I will continue to strongly advocate on behalf of our associates and customers, and urge our elected officials to do their part to promote a more just, tolerant and diverse society".
