Why white nationalists are flocking to Charlottesville for their rallies

The auto suspected to be involved in the crash was found shortly after and a male driver is in custody, authorities confirmed.

Between rally attendees and counter-protesters, authorities were expecting as many as 6,000 people, Charlottesville police said this week. A 32-year-old women died when a vehicle plowed into a crowd dispersing after police broke up the melee in the city's downtown.

The suspect has been identified as 20-year-old James Fields.

Here are a few more photos from the scene, after the auto hit the crowd.

It was not immediately clear if the collision was intentional. "From the far end of the street it accelerated, slowed down right before the crowd and then slammed on the gas through the crowd sending bodies flying". The vehicle then rapidly sped away in reverse as several people lay on the ground injured.

People fly into the air as a vehicle drives into a group of protesters demonstrating against a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12, 2017.

A "Unite the Right" white nationalist rally was held to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue in the city.

According to witnesses, counter protesters were hit as they turned a corner during their protest march.

And then he started rambling and bragging about the unemployment rate, about companies coming back to the USA, and "many incredible things" that he apparently thinks should be enough to end racism. The police are treating it as a criminal homicide, and charges are pending. At least one person is dead, and several others are injured.

Donald Trump, addressing the situation from his private golf club in New Jersey, declined to condemn white nationalism and instead said the blame for the violence lies with "many sides".

The father of Trump's press secretary, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, posted that white supremacy is the "worst kind of racism-it's EVIL and perversion of God's truth to ever think our Creator values some above others".

Trump condemned "this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides".

Asked for clarification, a White House official later said: "The President was condemning hatred, bigotry and violence from all sources and all sides".

Counter protesters regroup at Water St., reclaiming their city.
