Amber Rudd hits out at 'backseat driving' Boris Johnson

Mr Johnson set out his personal manifesto for Brexit in a 4,000 word article in the Daily Telegraph, which he did not inform Mrs May about until it was published.

Other senior Tories have said Mrs May is "too weak" to unite her cabinet and run an effective government if she fails to sack outspoken Mr Johnson. Home Secretary Amber Rudd described it as "backseat driving".

The timing has led to some speculation over whether Johnson is attempting to set himself up as a potential successor as leader of the Conservative Party.

At the same time, Johnson appeared to think it would be possible to retain some access to the EU's single market. The Prime Minister must spell out now how this will be paid for, or stand condemned for once again trying to mislead the British public.

The Foreign Secretary did not mention plans for a transition period after Britain leaves the bloc and argued there is no need to pay for market access.

"This country will succeed in our new national enterprise, and will succeed mightily", he wrote.

"Boris has had his say and he shows that energy and enthusiasm that he's famous for", Rudd told the BBC.

He said: "It's good ministers have stopped threatening to use our collective security as a Brexit bargaining chip, but this proposal is deeply muddled".

Nico Hulkenberg put his works Renault F1 auto at the head of the fourth row of the grid ahead of Fernando Alonso's McLaren-Honda. Vettel's performance was aided by his Ferrari SF-70H's aptitude for high downforce circuits and wide tire temperature window.

The Home Secretary said she did not think Mr Johnson's article was a leadership bid and said her Cabinet colleague added "enthusiasm, energy, and sometimes entertainment".

He wrote that the referendum was "decisive" and said Britain must leave the EU's customs union and single market, the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice and impose controls on borders.

Mr Green insisted Mrs May was the "driver" in the negotiations.

In his blueprint, Mr Johnson says Britain will spend £350 million-a-week on the NHS, a promise that was widely criticised during the Brexit campaign.

Mrs Rudd, who campaigned for the Remain side in the European Union referendum, said she had been too busy dealing with the Parsons Green Tube attack to read Mr Johnson's piece and questioned the timing of its release.

"It would be very nice if we could get a clear message on where the British are" on their financial obligations with the EU, Danish Finance Minister Anders Samuelsen said in an interview in Copenhagen on Friday.

In an apparent backtrack, Mr Johnson has said he was "looking forward" to Mrs May's Florence speech and he was "behind Theresa for a glorious Brexit".
