Birmingham Sack Harry Redknapp

Birmingham Sack Harry Redknapp

Birmingham signed 14 players during the summer transfer window but a failure to stop the rot saw Redknapp become the first managerial casualty of the Championship season.

Former Everton midfielder Lee Carsley, part of Redknapp's backroom staff, will takeover as caretaker manager.

The 70-year-old manager previously took charge at St. Andrews last season, guiding the club to safety following Gianfranco Zola's disastrous spell in charge.

There's a lot of sympathy out there for Harry Redknapp this evening.

We thank him for all his efforts and wish him good luck for the future.

Saturday's 3-1 home loss to Preston was the ex-West Ham and QPR boss' final match in charge of the Blues.

There will be no further comment at this time.

Speaking after the Preston game, but before learning his fate, Redknapp said his team had "disintegrated" against Preston.

"We started the second half well, on the front foot, we get a corner then after that they came on to us and we couldn't handle it". It was just rank, poor play from us that cost us goals.

"Fans deserve better and that was my motivation to carry on this season".

Following a miserable opening to this campaign, they lie second from bottom of the table after losing six of their opening eight games.

Carsley has a growing reputation in the game and is believed to be high on the list of candidates for the job, with former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka believed to be keen on the role, as is Redknapp's former assistant Steve Cotterill. "I would love to be the manager to bring some success to Birmingham".
