Browns cut Brock Osweiler, like everyone thought they would in March

The Cleveland Browns are moving on from quarterback Brock Osweiler as multiple media outlets are reporting Friday afternoon that the former Texans and Broncos quarterback has been released.

The Browns owe Osweiler $16 million, but Cleveland does get Houston's 2018 second-round pick as part of the offseason trade between the two.

It's nevertheless unusual to see the Browns outright cut Osweiler rather than keeping him on the roster even after rookie DeShone Kizer was named the team's Week 1 starter.

However, six months after acquiring him, the Browns have parted ways with Osweiler. Initially, the Browns were expected to name him starting quarterback but Kizer's outstanding play in the preseason changed their mind. With Osweiler out, the Browns will go with second-year quarterbacks Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan behind Kizer.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that the Chicago Bears released veteran wide receiver Victor Cruz, who failed to make his mark in the preseason. After signing a four-year, $72 million contract with the Texans, Osweiler was a bust in his lone season with the franchise, throwing for just 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. In one of the most shocking trades in recent National Football League history, the Texans basically paid the Browns a premium draft pick to take Osweiler and his contract off their hands. The following season, Richardson tallied eight sacks on his way to a stint in the 2014 Pro Bowl. He's 26 years old.
