Four US tourists attacked with acid in Marseille, France

Four American women were attacked with acid in Marseille's main train station in France on Sunday, the city's prosecutor's office said.

In April, French police say they thwarted an imminent "terror attack" and arrested two suspected radicals in Marseille just days before the first round of France's presidential election.

A 41-year-old man sprayed them with hydrochloric acid from a spray canister which is available in DIY shops.

The women were travelling between Marseilles and Paris when the incident took place. He was arrested shortly afterwards.

Limited information on the attack has been provided to the media by the Marseille prosecutor's office; however, the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act.

14 firefighters rushed to the scene in four emergency vehicles as the horror unfolded.

Acid attacks have become particularly common in the United Kingdom over the past few years.
