Heat Illness Can Be Deadly For Seniors Without Power

Dozens of nursing homes continued Thursday to lack electricity or had been evacuated because of Hurricane Irma, as the state grappled with the deaths of eight residents of a Broward County facility that did not have air conditioning.

Early Wednesday morning, three patients arrived at the hospital across the street with extremely high body temperatures.

"We want to make sure we interview everybody and see what they did and what they didn't do to make a determination, was there any criminal elements here", said Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez.

The remaining patients were treated for respiratory distress, dehydration and heat-related issues, officials said.

But Senate President pro tempore Anitere Flores, a Miami-Dade Republican, told reporters in Tallahassee Friday that she expects criminal charges to be filed.

U.S. Southeast utilities said on Friday they restored power to over 75 percent of the 7.8 million homes and businesses knocked out by Hurricane Irma, leaving almost 1.9 million of those customers still without electricity.

FPL says its response team is working on the ground, and from the air to get everyone's power back online.

"All those family members have a right to know what happened", she said. The deputy was overcome by fumes while approaching the home and called for fire rescue.

The storm also cut off power, water and sewage to the islands, which are home to some 70,000 people.

A total of eight others died in Georgia and the Carolinas.

A neighbor told FOX35 Orlando generators were not allowed in the community, and officials across Florida are warning people to keep generators outside homes. Another 42 nursing homes are being checked by police as precaution, and another 18 people at a nearby health facility have also been evacuated. We will be restoring power day and night.

The number of deaths blamed on Irma in Florida climbed to 13 with the carbon monoxide deaths, in addition to four in SC and two in Georgia. At least six people in Florida died of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning from generators, and a Tampa man died after the chain saw he was using to remove trees recoiled and cut his carotid artery. "It just doesn't seem to be going anywhere and I can't do anything until we get that fuse popped back in".

After helping to pass out food, the president took tours of several neighborhoods, where he witnessed firsthand the damage done by the hurricanes.

"When you think of the incredible power of that storm, and while people unfortunately passed, it was such a small number", Trump said.
