Hurricane Irma sign language interpreter spoke of pizza, bears, monsters during update

The operator of a company that provides deaf interpreters to Manatee County told WPTV that it was "horribly unnerving" for her to watch the press conference.

This sign language interpreter was not one of them. "It was obvious to me that he wasn't in a professional interpreter right off the bat, and then when he started signing, I was totally shocked", he said. In a news conference the Friday before Hurricane Irma made landfall, county officials laid out the basics for evacuation guidelines, but hearing impaired viewers got slightly different instructions: "Pizza want you are need be bear monster".

Chris Wagner is the former president of the National Association for the Deaf.

The deaf community has also asked for an apology, according to CBS New York.

Azzara told the paper that the county has requested an interpreter and public information assistance from the state of Florida.

He also wore a yellow top - interpreters usually wear a colour that contrasts against their skin tone, making their hands stand out.

South Korea performs missile drill
Oil futures are down modestly in Asian trade on Friday, but prices have been holding steady in the face of another missile test by North Korea .

"I knew something went horribly wrong", Charlene McCarthy told WFLA. Also, Greene kept turning his head and looking at the person talking at the podium.

McCarthy said she was not given any explanation about the identity of the man signing at the briefing, or why the county chose to use him as an interpreter during the briefing. His father explained that Marshall was asked by his bosses to help out during the press conference, and that's exactly what he did.

Greene's family stuck up for him in the midst of the criticism, saying, "He can't expect to communicate something he doesn't know".

People in Florida's deaf community are still waiting for answers as to why Manatee County's emergency operations center used an interpreter for the deaf who, instead of relaying important information about Hurricane Irma, signed "gibberish".

Meanwhile, the the deaf community is demanding an apology from the county, claiming this was way too risky and put lives at risk.
