NASCAR racing driver killed in plane crash

The racing community is mourning the loss of a veteran modified NASCAR driver, Ted Christopher, they said was one of the victims in a plane crash. The pilot also died in the crash.

According to crews, the aircraft crashed at approximately 1:53 PM on Saturday in an area near 480 West Street, and traveled approximately 75 feet into a wooded area.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that two people were aboard a small Mooney M20C plane that went down in the woods near the North Branford-Guilford border shortly before 2 p.m. Police say the crash killed the pilot and passenger. The FAA confirmed two people were onboard.

Police are still investigating the incident. Christopher made six starts in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, 21 in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, and two in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Christopher, the 2008 NASCAR Whelen Tour Modified champion, was scheduled to compete in Saturday night's race at Riverhead (New York) Raceway.

Ted Christopher (No. 82 Horton Avenue Materials Chevrolet) has 42 wins, 133 top fives and 203 top 10s in 372 career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour starts. He was a tough racer's racer, and his hard driving style and candid personality endeared him to short track fans throughout the country. The public address announcer Bob Finan described Mr. Christopher as a throwback racer, someone who always found a way to get to a race, whether it be by boat or plane. He will be missed throughout the racing community, in the garage and, especially, in the hearts of his many fans.

Ted Christopher (No. 82 Horton Avenue Materials Chevrolet) was credited with a 17th place DNF in Saturday night's NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) Toyota Mod Classic 150 at Oswego (NY) Speedway.

In a Facebook post from the Speedway, they said Ted was "one of the greatest modified drivers of all time".

Christopher, who competed in nine of the 12 NWMT races run so far this year, is now 13th in the 2017 championship standings after this event.
