United Nations refugee agency 'shocked' by killings in eastern DR Congo

Josue Boji, a Democratic Republic of Congo interior ministry official, said troops had tried to disperse the refugees by "firing in the air but were overwhelmed" when the group responded by throwing stones in Friday's confrontation.

The clashes broke out when refugees were opposed to repatriation to Burundi, Kasereka said.

Boji said the clashes began after a group of refugees overran a jail run by the country's domestic intelligence agency to demand the release of four Burundians who had been arrested for expulsion on Wednesday night.

Five soldiers and 20 of the attackers were killed in the fighting, Mende said.

Lt. John Mwanamboka said the refugees were killed in Kamanyola area in South Kivu province's Walungu territory after they allegedly rioted and the Congolese army made an attempt to control the situation.

What's more, New York Times reporter Glenn Thrush said a White House spokesperson had denied the meeting account, "saying the position hasn't changed".

Marchal said at least 50 others were wounded and the death toll is likely to rise.

Out of 40,000 Burundian asylum-seekers, 28,000 who fled hostilities in their country were identified by the DRC's National Commission for Refugees in Kamanyola.

Eyewitness Alfred Rukungo said the soldiers continued shooting into the crowd even after some refugees were wounded. The death of the Congolese army officer led to "the escalation of violence".

In the wake of the killings, Burundi's Foreign Minister Alain Aimé Nyamitwe took to Twitter demanding answers.

The violence in Burundi has killed over 700 people and a United Nations commission said last week there were reasonable grounds to believe authorities had committed crimes against humanity.
