Cheeto-In-Chief Trump Threatens To Pull Puerto Rico Relief Efforts

Cheeto-In-Chief Trump Threatens To Pull Puerto Rico Relief Efforts

The bipartisan bill sailed through the Republican-controlled House on Thursday - approved by a 353-to-69 vote - just hours after US President Donald Trump said that government response teams could not stay in Puerto Rico "forever".

Vox reported that conflicting numbers from the USA government and the Puerto Rican government have made it hard to estimate exactly how many people died - a figure that could go well into the hundreds.

Officials in Puerto Rico have said it could take $5 billion to get the island's electrical infrastructure up and running again. He says Puerto Rico shouldn't expect federal help "forever".

"In a trio of tweets, Trump wrote" "We can not keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been unbelievable (under the most hard circumstances) in P.R. forever!" Some also noted that as the island was reeling from Hurricane Maria, the president was instead tweeting about NFL players' behavior during the national anthem.

Trump's comments are his latest remarks on Puerto Rico to offer a mix of criticism and support - and to draw what seems to be a direct response from local politicians in the USA territory.

The bill includes $18.7 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief fund.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers, however, said more money would likely be needed later.

But the federal relief effort has also hit problems such as reported hoarding by municipal employees, Tom said, citing it as one reason for the "militarization of the aid operation" in Puerto Rico.

For some reason, a Florida couple decided to make a Packers-Cowboys bet that involved burning the losing team's jersey. The Indian River County Sheriff's Office received a call about the incident around 9:00 p.m.

Quoting former CBS News reporter Sheryl Attkisson and Puerto Rico's governor in a tweet, Trump said the territory's "electric and infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes" and passed the buck to Congress to "decide how much to spend".

"The minute you go anywhere as a first responder, and this would apply certainly to the military, you will try really hard to work yourself out of a job", Kelly said Thursday at the White House.

The national flood program, which is set to expire on December 8, is meant to help homeowners living in flood-prone areas that private insurers wouldn't cover and is already several million dollars in debt.

The governor's office did not respond to queries about the total amount of aid requested, which is now equivalent to around half of Puerto Rico's debt of some US$73 billion.

In its statement, the White House said it urged Congress to adopt reforms to the program to ensure its "long-term financial viability".

Democrats objected to the tone of Mr. Trump's tweets, saying the posts didn't sufficiently acknowledge the magnitude of the disaster gripping Puerto Rico.

"The president of the United States is tweeting out threats to withdraw assistance, that is an outrage, that is an insult", Velazquez said.
