Maryam Nawaz, Captain Safdar appear before court once again

The daughter and son-in-law of ousted Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif were on Monday granted bail by the country's anti-graft court in the Panama Papers scandal as they appeared before it following their return from London.

Meanwhile, Retired Captain Muhammad Safdar, the son-in-law of the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday approached the Islamabad High Court against his and wife Maryam Nawaz's scheduled indictment in a graft reference.

Maryam and Safdar reached the court to attend the hearing amid tight security but the court could not indict them due to the clash between security forces and lawyers.

While speaking to media Maryam Nawaz asked the interior ministry to come up with a strategy to avoid such events from reoccurring.

Ahead of the hearing strict security measures have been taken as over 750 troops have been deployed around the federal judicial complex, while workers of the party will not be allowed to enter the court premises.

The hearing was postponed till October 19 without indicting Maryam Nawaz and captain retd.

Meanwhle PML-N Senator Pervaiz Rashid said: "Nawaz Sharif today did not appear before the Accountability Court in Islamabad because he is in London to look after his ailing wife Begum Kulsoom".

The court declared Hussain and Hassan absconders after their perpetual absence from proceedings.

A senior leader of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) said that Sharif had nominated a representative to appear before the court to face the indictment and deny the charges. He set Oct 13 for his, Maryam and Safdar's indictment.

Later, an advocate, Naeem Gujar, filed an application to the judge for an inquiry into the incident.

Sharif, his daughter, his son-in-law, and his two sons face corruption allegations stemming from an investigation into documents leaked from a Panama law firm that indicated that Sharif and some of his family members had undisclosed assets overseas.

Both Maryam and Safdar have been charged by the NAB in one of three corruption cases filed on September 8 against Sharif. The cases were filed after the July 28 verdict by the Supreme Court which disqualified Sharif.
