Microsoft kept quiet on details of 2013 cyber breach

Only a brief statement was put out by Microsoft at the time and this was weeks after the other breaches were reported.

However, according to five former security employees Reuters spoke to, there was widespread concern inside the tech giant at the time that the stolen info would be used in follow-on attacks. The company never fully disclosed the extent of that hack despite the potential risks it posed to users, Reuters reported. Microsoft and Google's security teams, for example, have each disclosed flaws in each other's products over the years, a process which when properly vetted is less about scoring competitive points and more about fixing holes as quickly as possible. "We have no evidence of customer data being affected, and our investigation is ongoing", the company said at the time.

Microsoft's internal database of known software vulnerabilities, which included details of flaws in both its software and software made by others, was hacked in 2013, according to a new report.

After similar attacks hit Facebook and Apple, Microsoft released a statement on its blog declaring that it had "experienced a similar security intrusion".

The breach impacted a Microsoft database that contained data on unfixed bugs and vulnerabilities in a host of software, including Windows, the report said.

Former employees told Reuters that Microsoft has fixed the gaps for a few months after the cyber attacks.

The hackers are considered one of the most sophisticated and unsafe groups in operation, and continues to be active today.

The Microsoft matter should remind companies to treat accurate bug reports as the "keys to the kingdom", said Mark Weatherford, who was deputy undersecretary for cybersecurity at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security when Microsoft learned of the breach.

It is thought the attack was carried out by a group known as Morpho, Butterfly and Wild Neutron which also attacked Facebook, Apple and Twitter.

Microsoft's failure to disclose its breach in 2013 did not stop the company from scolding the United States National Security agency for experiencing a similar security incident earlier this year. And it was poorly protected, the former employees said, with only a simple password locking it down.

Former employees told the publication that the hackers broke into a database that contained information about the vulnerabilities of the company's products.

These people said the study concluded that even though the bugs in the database were used in ensuing hacking attacks, the perpetrators could have gotten the information elsewhere.

"They absolutely discovered that bugs had been taken", said one. "Whether or not those bugs were in use, I don't think they did a very thorough job of discovering".

The possibility could not be ruled out, however, as Microsoft relied on automated reports from crashes to track attacks, according to Reuters.
