Mike Ditka: 'There Has Been No Oppression In The Last 100 Years'

"This is America. You should be free to do what you want to do and leave it at that".

The issue has been a topic of a national debate, which intenstified after President Donald Trump's comments that NFL owners should "fire" players who don't stand for the anthem. So I would say: "Adios". Well I can't see atoms either, but if you ask the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they're pretty familiar with their existence. I think you have to respect the game... I think the opportunity is there for everybody. I think you can accomplish anything, and we have watched that throughout our history of our country.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka said during a radio interview Monday that he doesn't believe there has been oppression in the United States in the "last 100 years". Maybe I'm not watching as carefully as other people.

While Namath may support the message behind the protest and the players' method of expression, he believes National Football League owners have the right to tell players where they are and aren't allowed to protest.

Ditka argued that players weren't showing "respect for the game" when they kneeled, just "respect for their own individual opinions". You've got to look at a person for what he is and what he stands for and how he produces, not by the color of his skin.

"You know, you've got a ballot box, you've got an election. Go to another country and play football", Ditka said.

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you'd say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out!"

"I think there's been a somewhat of a disappointment with a lot of folks on how our country's been looked at, how our flag has been treated with respect", Namath said. "People rise to the top and they became very influential people in our country by doing the right things". "That's where you protest", Ditka said.

Smith went a step further, calling Ditka a "dumb a$$" for claiming "this never happened". Anybody who disrespects this country and the flag. Understand? We will not. if we are disrespecting the flag, then we will not play. "I mean, I don't see all this, the social injustice that some of these people see". There is nothing wrong with acknowledging race, the problem is when you add bogus and racist attitudes to your observations.
