National Hockey League player 'receives death threats' after becoming first to join anthem protest

On Saturday, JT Brown became the first NHL player to stage some sort of protest during the National Anthem when he was seen was a raised fist in the air just before the team's regular season game.

They're using their national platform - and the national anthem - to make that known. "Not many people that look like me". The decision to raise his fist, a tactic already utilized in the National Football League by the Philadelphia Eagles' Malcolm Jenkins, came after he considered a kneeling protest - the same one popularized by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and condemned by President Donald Trump - as well as prayer and conversations with military personnel. Speaking with the Tampa Bay Times, Brown explained that the fist was a "middle ground for those who say kneeling for the anthem disrespects the flag". "Our biggest thing is we've got his back". "In my life, I have been through more than my fair share of racism both on and off the ice".

The forward, 27, revealed on Sunday he received death threats on social media after his protest.

"There comes a time when you can not remain silent, hoping and wishing for a change", wrote the Lightning player. "It takes much more". We can't just stick with the status quo.

Oregon State, Head Football Coach Gary Andersen 'Mutually Part' Ways
Oregon State last played in a bowl game back in 2013, topping Boise State in the Hawaii Bowl with Mike Riley at the helm. The Beavers finished the season well with a rivalry win over OR , and they hoped to take another step forward in 2017.

Even having previously raised his fist, though, Brown said post-game on Saturday that he was expecting to face "negative backlash" for joining in the protests that began with NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and have since spread to other leagues. Wrote Brown: "My (mentions) on Twitter alone prove why this topic must be talked about".

The goal in raising his fist, Brown added in his statement, is to raise awareness of "the real issues". "We need to be able to listen to those with an opposing view and talk to one another if we want to learn, grow, and make change".

It was a subtle gesture by Tampa Bay Lightning right winger J.T. Brown.

The team released a statement, saying in part that the organization respects players and their individual choices on social and political issues.
