No Firecrackers This Diwali! Supreme Court Restores Ban in Delhi-NCR

Later, on 12 September, the apex court had temporarily lifted its earlier order and permitted sale of firecrackers.

The Bench headed by Justice A.K. Sikri said it would "try" to deliver the judgment on Monday.

On November 25 past year, the apex court banned the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR until further notice in wake of the alarming levels of air pollution in the region. The court also went on to say that firecrackers will be available in the NCR from November 1 onwards.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted "for the time being" its order of suspending the permanent licences for sale and retail of fire crackers within the National Capital Region (NCR) by modifying its order of November past year.

The apex court of the country which earlier lifted the ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR in September this year has once again chose to the restore the ban till November 1.

Teams battle for World Cup spots
Nonetheless, a few dramatic results inched some teams ever closer while leaving others perilously close to missing out. Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) suffered a 4-3 loss to Belgium in a 2018 football World Cup qualifier here.

Pollution levels in Delhi and NCR rose to risky levels following the bursting of firecrackers during 2016 Diwali.

However, senior counsel C.A. Sundaram appearing for the permanent licence holders defended the lifting of ban saying that bursting of fire crackers during festive season of Diwali contributed in a small measure to the air pollution in Delhi and the NCR.

The top court last month had partially allowed the sale of firecrackers by directing Delhi Police to not grant more than 500 temporary licences for retail sale of firecrackers in the national capital during this year's Dussehra and Diwali. The Supreme Court judgement has come ahead of Diwali.

This yeaer's festival of Diwali is on October 19.
