Officer reportedly shot in New Orleans East

New Orleans - A New Orleans Police Officer was shot and killed early Friday morning when he exchanged gunfire with suspect at the Cindy Place apartments in New Orleans East.

It happened shortly after midnight, police say. The officer returned fired back. No other officers were wounded. The officer was patrolling the area of Tower Lane and Lake Forest Boulevard when he saw something suspicious, said NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison to FOX 8.

"There was only one gunman", said Harrison.

At the request of the officer's family, NOPD has not yet named the officer who was killed. The NOPD, Louisiana State Police and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the scene.

When the officer got out of his auto, someone fired and hit him. Eventually, the suspect surrendered peacefully and was transported to a local hospital.

Harrison said two officers might have fired on the gunman.

"Unfortunately, our worst nightmares have come to be", Landrieu said.
