Opposition is calling for a halt in announcing Liberia's presidential election results

Any irregularities would taint the results of an election expected to mark the first democratic transfer of power in over seven decades in a country haunted by a civil war that ended almost 15 years ago. The Nobel Peace Prize victor was Africa's first female president and helped the country rebuild from years of civil war and the devastating Ebola crisis.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 in fulfillment of her constitutional rights cast her vote in Fefeh Bomi County.

"The mission believes thus far, and let me emphasis here, the mission believes thus far, up to this point, that with the environment and the lead up to the election, the voting day activities, sorting and counting of the ballot, Liberia is largely on track to achieve a credible poll".

In Antarctica there was a mysterious giant hole
Known as polynyas or semipermanent area of open water in sea ice, this Weddell polynya is quite mysterious in terms of its origin. A robotic float has been deployed to study the polynya's measurements, which lies hundreds of kilometers from the ice edge.

Voters commended her leadership but said they were ready for change. Global observers say Tuesday's vote went smoothly despite late starts in some counties. Sirleaf is a United Methodist and the first female head of state in Africa. If there is a runoff election it will come two weeks after that announcement.

The election turnout was impressive, especially among younger generations, said Christopher Fomunyoh of the USA -funded National Democratic Institute, which was monitoring the elections. Fomunyoh, who also observed Liberia's 2005 elections, said Sirleaf helped create an environment for an open race with such a high number of candidates. - AP.
