Paris plans to ban gas-powered cars in city by 2030

Paris is planning to ban all but electric cars by 2030. The City of Lights plans to bring about a gradual phaseout of combustion-engine cars by the year 2030, avoiding calling it a "ban" but echoing steps already taken by the city government to reduce air pollution in the city, Reuters reports.

Meanwhile, Oxford has also announced it will restrict diesel and gas cars from its center and is set to become the first United Kingdom city to do so.

Under the rule, only electric cars would be allowed in the city.

The French capital, which will host the Olympic games in the summer of 2024 and was host city for the latest worldwide pact on policies to tame global warming, had already been eyeing an end to diesel cars in the capital by the time of that event.

Christophe Najdovski, chief of city's transport policies, said that fossil-fueled vehicles are one of main factors that led to greenhouse gas emissions. "In order to achieve the goal of an end to the thermal engines in 2030, the City has chose to invest in the development of alternatives and in the reinforcement of financial aids that allow individuals and professionals to buy clean vehicles".

The city's planned steps to phase out gasoline- and diesel-engined cars reflect a growing trend among large cities to take action on environmental issues apart from their countries' governments.

Paris has faced rising air pollution in the last few years.

The city's statement emphasized that it was going to make the transition easy for its citizens, pointing to recent announcements by automakers to gradually stop producing gas and diesel cars.

Hidalgo has already implemented a number of measures to reduce air pollution from cars. Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot has said he wants to banish from France all fossil fuel cars by 2040. By offering alternatives, we can do without a personal vehicle.

On Oct. 1, the city held "a day without cars", with the intention of making Paris "less polluted, more pleasant and more peaceful".
