Qualcomm Fined Record $773M For Antitrust Breach

The Taiwanese Fair Trade Commission has fined Qualcomm NT$23.4 billion ($773 million) for antitrust violations. According to a report by the Bloomberg news service, the fine is the largest ever imposed by the TFTC.

The FTC launched an antitrust investigation into alleged Qualcomm violations in February 2015, and after two years of the probe, the commission found the USA firm to be involved in direct or indirect behavior to prevent other smartphone designers from competing in the Taiwan market for seven years at least.

Qualcomm disagrees with the ruling and says that it plans to appeal both the ruling and the fine.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sued Qualcomm, charging the company with using anticompetitive tactics to maintain a monopoly over chips for mobile technologies including CDMA, WCDMA and LTE. Taiwan is only the latest country to go after Qualcomm over its expensive and onerous licensing terms: China and South Korea have both fined the company in the past two years, and Apple is now engaged in a series of global lawsuits against Qualcomm over numerous same practices. The U.S. case is still pending.

Foerster said in a resignation statement Monday he accepts full responsibility for his actions and wants to focus on getting help. Furthermore, Nig'e said she believes if Foerster were black, he would've been fired instead of being allowed to resign.

The regulator said Qualcomm abused its position by not providing products to clients who don't agree with its conditions.

Qualcomm said it is planning to seek a stay on any required measures and appeal the decision to the Taiwanese courts after receiving the FTC's formal decision, which is expected over the next few weeks.

The company has been violating antitrust rules for at least seven years, collecting licensing fees from local companies during that time, the Taiwanese regulator said in a statement on its website Wednesday.
