REAL ID enforcement grace period extended

REAL ID enforcement grace period extended

"During this time, federal agencies will continue to accept drivers' licenses and identification cards issued by states with these pending extension requests", said Minnesota Department of Public Safety spokesman Bruce Gordon.

Minnesota's extension for Real ID enforcement expired Tuesday, but state officials say there's no reason for concern.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a REAL ID enforcement grace period through January 22, 2018, which means that Pennsylvania residents will not face access issues when entering federal facilities through at least that date.

The federal government has granted Minnesota a little breathing room in its race to comply with the federal Real ID law, but not as much time as Gov. Mark Dayton and other state officials say they need to fully implement the changes. The state's requests for longer extensions during which current licenses would be accepted by the federal government have not yet been granted.

The Real ID Act set national standards to improve the security of state-issued identification to prevent undocumented immigrants and terrorists from obtaining US driver's licenses.

Real ID is a federal law, first approved in 2005, to set minimum security standards for federally acceptable identification.

Minnesota is getting more time to comply with REAL ID.

Missouri has been among a handful of holdouts to the REAL ID Act of 2005, which Congress passed in the wake of terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. It expects to begin issuing the new licenses in October 2018.

Minnesota has requested a REAL ID compliance extension through October 2018. "As chief author of that bill, I will continue to work with our governor and the Department of Homeland Security in order to ensure Minnesotans are able to continue business as usual".
