Saudi buys Russia's S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems

Saudi buys Russia's S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems

THAAD is a kind of missile meant for being deployed against ballistic missiles.

During the first visit by a Saudi king to Russia, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz and Russian President, Vladimir Putin, underlined the rapprochement between the two countries by signing important agreements in the military and energy fields.

When asked about fears that Saudi Arabia could use the S-400 system against Iran, Peskov said Russia's decision to offer the missiles to Riyadh was not aimed at any third party.

Russia's Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation has officially confirmed the conclusion of the deal with Saudi Arabia on the supply of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems and other weapons.

The US sale has not yet "concluded", it confirmed.

The S-400 is a very capable missile-defense system, somewhat comparable to the US's MIM-104 Patriot, according to CSIS.

The sale of the anti-aircraft systems to United States allies - Turkey and Saudi Arabia - was criticized in Washington, but did not affect the outcome of the deals.

He said that Riyadh was set to cooperate with Moscow in the fight against terrorism.

"This sale furthers US national security and foreign policy interests, and supports the long-term security of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region in the face of Iranian and other regional threats", the statement said.

"Lots of militants from both Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia are fighting for the Islamic State [terrorist group, outlawed in Russia]", the Saudi top diplomat said.

Officials told AFP that the sale, which can go ahead if the US Congress does not object within 30 days, should be seen as part of an overall $110 billion arms package that President Donald Trump promised the Saudi kingdom during a visit in May. Saudi Arabia's neighbours, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, have also been supplied THAAD systems.
