Threat of postal strike as workers back action

Threat of postal strike as workers back action

"The news of a Royal Mail strike should set alarm bells ringing for retailers as they head into their busiest time of the year".

When is the strike likely to hit?

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has announced that its members working for Royal Mail have voted in favour of taking industrial action in their dispute over pensions, pay and jobs.

"Of course, should the CWU legitimately take strike action then our members will face some challenges but we have made it clear to the employer that we expect them not to abuse our members in the workplace, they should do what they are contracted to do, that will be our advice to them".

"Royal Mail is committed to further talks as a matter of urgency, to reach agreement with the CWU".

Union leaders are due to meet tomorrow to decide on action following the nationwide ballot of members.

Royal Mail Group's express parcel business, Parcelforce Worldwide, is also recruiting around 2,100 extra people, including around 1,200 drivers and around 900 parcel sorters. "The union can not take industrial action until they have been completed", Royal Mail said.

"It's fair to say we are not in dispute with the employer at the minute", Scott told PrintWeek. The union can not take industrial action until they have been completed.

Steven Avery Of 'Making A Murderer' Gets Denied Request For New Trial
Avery gained worldwide attention in late 2015 when he was profiled in the Netflix documentary series, Making A Murderer . The state is fighting that ruling and a federal appeals court heard arguments in the case last week.

"If industrial action goes into the seasonal period it will have a huge impact". It undermines the trust of our customers. We are not proposing to change our core terms and conditions or our commitment to a predominantly permanent workforce. Royal Mail's strike adds to others including at Capita and the Bank of England where campaigners have referenced pension rights as a reason for industrial action.

"Under its proposals, Royal Mail would continue to provide the best pay and terms and conditions in the industry".

You can find out more about the temporary roles at Royal Mail - and apply for live vacancies - from this page of their website. Royal Mail pays 45-50% more than this.

It has also offered workers a pay increase of 5 per cent over two years if certain performance measures are met.

The union accused the company of "unilaterally" closing its defined benefit, or final salary, pension scheme and there is a further dispute over pay and issues such as delivery office closures.

Royal Mail has subsequently offered workers new defined contribution-based schemes with the aim of keeping its contributions at about £400m.

"We say to Royal Mail these negotiations that subsequently led us to this point of balloting have been going on for 18 months and unless you shift your position sufficiently and very quickly then industrial action is inevitable".
